What we do

We, Thiasos  place music, dance, and visual spectacle at the heart of our work, with the chorus always at the centre.

Since only fragments of ancient music remain and since what is known of the choreography is frozen in time, we reimagine music and dance while  always preserving something of the original. Our performances are practical ways to make ancient drama come alive on the modern stage—something we feel is rarely achieved. Too often we see dreary, self-indulgent productions that betray the vitality of the plays by leaving out the dances and by relying too heavily on naturalistic acting.  The chorus exists to sing and dance, not merely to chant or lament; and attempts to impose spurious “modern relevance” only weaken the drama’s impact. We believe that Greek theatre is most powerful when its essentially formal, yet celebratory nature is embraced.
